Agreement Reached for the Export of Peruvian Blueberries to the Bolivian Market
Feb 25, 2025What regulations must novel foods and additives meet for EU export?
The European Union has strict regulations for importing novel foods and food additives. According to Mr. Dao Van Cuong, an expert at the Vietnam SPS Office, Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 defines "novel food" as any food not significantly consumed in the EU before May 15, 1997. This includes foods with modified molecular structures, those derived from microorganisms or minerals, and foods produced using new technologies. For food additives, Regulation (EU) 1333/2008 provides guidelines. Additives are defined as substances not typically consumed as food themselves but added for a technological purpose. Examples include sweeteners, colorants, and preservatives. Both novel foods and food additives must undergo safety assessments and meet specific criteria before being marketed in the EU. They must be safe for consumption, not mislead consumers, and serve a necessary technological function. Vietnamese agricultural products like chia seeds and snail meat are considered novel foods under these regulations. Businesses are advised to consult with the Vietnam SPS Office for guidance on these complex regulations before exporting to the EU.
