Feb 25, 2025Global Quinoa Market: Peru and Bolivia Face New Competition
The quinoa export market has significantly changed since its 2014 boom. While Peru and Bolivia remain major players in global export, new competitors have emerged, impacting market growth. The International Trade Centre (ITC) reports that Peru and Bolivia account for 70-80% of the approximately 120,000 tons of quinoa exported annually. However, global quinoa consumption continues to rise, with an estimated 40% now produced outside these two countries. Countries like Spain and France have developed their own quinoa production, utilizing saponin-free varieties that reduce costs. This increased competition, coupled with market saturation from countries like Spain, has affected global prices and Peruvian export volumes. While the 2024-2025 season anticipates price improvements, the average FOB price remains around USD 2.50 per kg. Organic and fair trade markets offer a price advantage for producers, but overall, the quinoa market requires new strategies to navigate the evolving competitive landscape.
