The Maersk cargo ship Saltoro, carrying a large shipment of Chilean cherries, arrived at the Chinese port of Nansha over a month late, resulting in significant quality issues. According to Christian Olmos Iriarte, a specialist in control, management, and commercial analysis, over 10% of the inspected fruit showed signs of rot and mold. Chinese authorities halted the unloading process to prevent a potential health emergency, as the fruit is likely unfit for consumption. With unloading stopped and limited options for disposal at the port, the situation involving over 1,300 containers is now in the hands of lawyers.
