Agreement Reached for the Export of Peruvian Blueberries to the Bolivian Market
Feb 25, 2025The Main Problem Facing Peruvian Grapes: Climate Change
Peru's table grape campaign is nearing its end, with projections of a record-breaking 80 million boxes exported, exceeding the previous season's 63 million. Joaquín Balarezo, general manager of leading agro-export company Ecosac, attributes this success to favorable international prices and increased volume. However, climate change and water scarcity remain significant challenges. The northern region of Piura, despite exceeding expectations with over 35 million boxes exported alongside Lambayeque, faced severe water shortages in the early months of the growing season. While recent rainfall has improved water levels in the Chira River, the overall water volume remains low. This situation necessitates innovative solutions, such as the adoption of double harvests for certain grape varieties like Sugar Crisp, Arra 15, and Escarlota, showcasing the region's adaptability. Despite these hurdles, the industry remains optimistic, with producers emphasizing the importance of learning from other grape-producing nations and adapting to the changing climate.
