Feb 25, 2025EU Export Product Labels Require Over 10 Information Fields
According to Ms. Ton Nu Thuc Uyen, Acting Director of the Vietnam WTO/TBT Enquiry Point, EU Regulation 1169/2011 mandates comprehensive food labeling for consumer protection. Key requirements for food exporters include accurate product information, clear usage instructions, and prominent labeling of allergens. Labels must not mislead consumers regarding health benefits or product composition. While the EU emphasizes avoiding unnecessary trade barriers, specific label information may require prior approval based on health, environmental, or security risks. Typical label information includes product name, ingredients, quantity, 'best before' or 'use by' date, storage instructions, and manufacturer details. Nutritional information, especially energy, fat, sugar, and salt content, is crucial for European consumers. Additionally, permitted health claims must adhere to specific regulations and scientific substantiation. Ms. Uyen urges businesses to prioritize accurate labeling and proactively research trade regulations to mitigate risks.
